I live in America. Just like many countries, there are different regions here, and people in those regions speak with different accents. As a result, hearing a person’s accent can tell you things about the person before you’ve even heard their name.

For example, if a person was raised in the southern states of the US, like Georgia or Texas, then they tend to have a ‘southern’ accent. Simply hearing a ‘southerner’ speak, therefore, tells me that there is a higher than normal possibility that that person will have a more conservative viewpoint; and perhaps may be more familiar with certain foods as opposed to foods more popular in other regions (for my boyfriend, that means a deep love of BBQ). If a person was raised in a northern state like New York or New Jersey [as I was], then they have a ‘northerner’ accent, and the possibility is higher than normal that the person will have a more liberal viewpoint, will lead a busier life, they probably enjoy pizza, etc.

There are always exceptions to this rule, of course. But certain things stay constant: for example, the likelihood of a northerner experiencing snow ( and a ‘White Christmas’! ^0^ ) would be higher than a southerner, since climate doesn’t change from individual to individual; conversely, someone from the south will have a lot to say about humongous bugs and really hot weather.

All of that, to ask this: what would you say are the probable viewpoints, tastes and habits of people who speak the different accents (and languages) of India? Is there such a thing as a Tripura accent, for example, and what would that tell you about the likely food choices, religious observances and viewpoints about the person? If you hear someone speaking Mizo or Gujarati; is there anything in particular that comes to mind?

Kingfisher Airlines’ debt restructuring package has received an in-principle nod from bankers. The package will be implemented within 120 days of receiving the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) nod. Kingfisher, the second largest carrier in terms of market share, has debt of around Rs 6,000 crore across 12 lenders such as the State Bank of India, Bank of India and Vijaya Bank, among others.
